From "Mackie History", Virginia French Mackie, July 1965:

"Charles Bush was a mining engineer, of German Ancestry. He and "Bushy" and their two little daughters lived in Leadville, Colorado, where he was an engineer for one of the silver mines.

"One evening, when he was coming home from work, a drunk staggered, shooting, from a tavern brawl on the opposite side of the street. One of the bullets ricichetted [ibid] and struck Charles Bush in the head, killing him instantly - dead at the age of thirty.

"After his death, "Bushy" stayed on in Leadville for a while and supported herself and her two little girls by operating a hotel. She knew the Tabors and Baby Doe Tabor.

"Bushy was a handsome woman and was afraid of nothing. She carried a revolver in the pocket of her petticoats when she lived in Leadville. But after a drunk tried to break into her home one night, she realized that Leadville was not a proper place to bring up her young daughters, and she brought them back to Neosho Falls, Kansas, about 1888, where some of her people lived.

"When George Kerr Mackie and Flora Elizabeth Bush were married in 1894, 'Bushy' lived with them and helped to bring up their six children, all of whom adored her. When her younger daughter, Evelyn, married John W. Mackie, younger brother of George Kerr Mackie, she spent much time with them in Scammon and in Pittsburg, Kansas, and helped to bring up their three children. It was a comfort to her that her two daughters had married two brothers and that her family was so closely united.

"She lived to see not only her grand-children, but her great-grand-children. She spent a year with David in Los Angeles when he was working there, and she often told me that it was one of the happiest years of her life. David's friends adored her and everyone called her 'Bushy'. She often visited Martha and Joe Daniels and their two daughters in Pelham, N.Y., and she visited us in New Haven. She was of Scotch-Irish parentage, and when she was almost 80, was still a handsome woman with snow white hair and deep blue eyes."
