Joseph Daniels and his good wife were delighted on that winter day when a son arrived to cheer their pioneer home. He may not have been a beautiful baby, in the eyes of the settlers in the sparsely peopled neighborhood, but his mother loved him and so did his dad. "Early in life he developed a keen sense of humor, and a look at his eyes today reveals that after all the years that characteristic still lights his face. Many a time it has saved the day when the traveling was rough. "While his name is George W., his middle name is not Washington and he will be quick to so inform you George Warren Daniels is the full handle. "Some 60 years ago he was elected register and recorder of Potter County and he has since resided here except for three or four years in Kansas. He served two terms in office. "From 1923 to 1957 he was one of the owners of the Enterprise, and you may be sure that the force at this office rejoices in his longevity, is delighted that he is in excellent health and still able to stroll about town when weather conditions permit. His good wife passed away in 1954 and since then he has resided in the home of his daughter and her husband, Senator and Mrs. James S Berger. His son Joe Daniels is an attorney residing at Rumson, N.J. Daniels, a native of Bingham Township and for some 60 years a Coudersport resident, passed away in the Potter County Memorial Hospital late Wednesday afternoon, where he had been a patient only a few days. He was one of the oldest and best known residents of this place. Mr. Daniels was born Feb. 13, 1871, a son of Joseph W. and Elizabeth Jane Bassett Daniels, in Bingham Township, Potter County. He married Flora M. Borst at Whitesville, N.Y. in 1890. As a young man he was elected register and recorder of Potter County and served two terms soon after the turn of the century. Since then he had resided here except for three or four years in Kansas. For more than 30 years, with W. D. Fish, he was publisher of The Potter Enterprise until six years ago when he sold his interest and retired. Mr. Daniels was a member of Lewisville Lodge, F. & A.M. Coudersport Consistory, A.A.S.R. and of the former Baptist Church of Coudersport. Survivors of the genial and keen-witted man are a daughter, Mrs. James S. Berger of Coudersport, a son, Joe E. Daniels of Rumson, N.J., four grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Friends were received at the Grabe Funeral Home and funeral service was held at 1:30 Saturday afternoon. Officiating was the Rev. Strathmore Kilkenny, rector of Christ Episcopal Church. Internment was in Ulysses Cemetery. Pall bearers were William D. Fish, Jr., Collins Herrick, Edward Fuller, Frank Mosch, Burdett Erway, James Jewrat, and Arthur DuBois. Honorary bearers were from Coudersport Rotary Club and Lewisveill Masonic Lodge. | |||||
