Joseph W. Zakaitis, 82, of Pine Street, died Aug. 13 at the Center for Extended Care at Amherst with his family by his side.Born Nov. 5, 1922, in Sunderland, he was the son of the late Joseph and Eva (Domikitas) Zakaitis.
He was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran of World War II.
Mr. Zakaitis worked for the town of Amherst as a mechanic for 27 years until retiring, and previously worked at Warner Bros. Construction for 17 years.
After his retirement, he became a handyman for the elderly, helping them with whatever they needed.
He was a communicant of Most Holy Redeemer Church in Hadley.
He was an excellent horseshoe player.
He leaves his wife of 60 years, Genevieve ''Jean'' Zakaitis; a son, Robert J. Zakaitis, of Amherst; a sister, Anna Duffey, of West Springfield; three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
A brother, John Zakaitis, died earlier.
Memorial gifts may be made to either the Holy Rosary Cemetery Fund, 120 Russell St., Hadley, 01035, or Cancer Connection, P.O. Box 60452, Florence, 01062.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 8 a.m. from The Douglass Funeral Service in Amherst with a Mass at 9 a.m. in Most Holy Redeemer Church.
Burial will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery in Hadley.
