Matilda was a bitter opponent of Empress Matilda, the daughter of Henry I.
Matilda was a powerful heiress, and used her resources to bolster support for her husband. In 1140, she further strengthened his cause by agreeing a marriage between her son, Eustace and the daughter of King Louis VII of France.
