    SANTA FE, N.M. - Virginia French Mackie, 104, died June 20, 2005, at her home, Santa Fe, N.M.

    She was born Aug. 15, 1900, at Lancaster, Mo. She graduated from Hutchinson High School, Hutchinson, where she had composed the school song, which is still performed to this day. In 1921, she graduated from Wellesley College in Massachusetts and later got her masters degree from Columbia University, New York City. She received a diploma from the Ecole de Musiqu in France and was awarded an honorary degree from the University of Arizona in 1974. She received an honorary doctorate of music from the University of Missouri, Kansas City, in 1989. A resident of Santa Fe, formerly of Hutchinson, Kansas City, Mo., New Haven, and Tucson, Ariz., she was a teacher. She taught at a junior college at Kansas City, Mo., Smith College, Northampton, the University of Missouri, the University of Arizona and the Yale School of Music.

    She married David C. Mackie. He preceded her in death.

    Survivors include: a son; two daughters; a grandson; and a great-granddaughter.

    A memorial of celebration was held June 23 at Santa Fe, N.M. Arrangements were handled by Berardinelli Family Funeral Service, Santa Fe.
